Learn to Sew: Machine basics and sewing a basic pillow case (Session B)

Learn to Sew Series

This is designed as a three-part series for beginners or those with no sewing machine experience. Cost is $20 per class plus materials (see each class for additional info).

A kit will be available for additional purchase for class 1 only. Please indicate if you would like a kit when reserving your space for the class.

Patterns will be provided for class 3 and are $3 a piece.

See each class for a list of supplies to bring.  At the end of class 1 and class 2 a brief discussion will be done to explain the list of supplies for the next class.

If you have a sewing machine- this is the perfect time to bring it, even if you have never used it.  The instructor is well versed in different machines and will assist in learning your specific machine.

If you have no machine- a limited supply will be available to use.  Please specify in your reservation if you are bringing a machine or if you need to have one available for use.

Class 1- Machine basics and sewing a basic pillow case

In this class you will:

·  Learn the basics of a sewing machine- how to thread the machine, stitches, sewing feet, basic maintenance of the machine

·  Discussion on types of fabric

·  To wash or not wash fabric prior to sewing

·  Discussion on scissors

·  How to cut fabric

·  Seam allowances

·  Trimming corners

·  Basic hem

·  Make a basic pillow case

All participants need to bring with them a pair of good scissors- ideally you want ones that will only be used for fabric.  See below for additional items to bring based off if purchasing a kit or not.

Kits

These are available for additional purchase for $5. Please specify at reservation that you will need a kit. Kit will include the fabric, thread and straight pins needed to complete the project.

If you are not purchasing a kit, please bring the following materials with you:

• 1 yard of 100% cotton, at least 44 inches wide – any color/any design
• Thread
• Straight pins

*If you do not have a machine-  Please indicate this when you register.

** If you are bringing your machine- PLEASE make sure to bring everything that came with your machine- the instruction manual, all tools/accessories, foot pedal and power cord.

We will have a brief discussion near the end of the class with more detailed information on what to bring for materials for Class 2 if you choose to continue on with the sewing series.
